Difficulty In Breathing

Difficulty in breathing may be due to nasal block or narrowing of larynx or trachea. The narrowing of larynx (voice box) or trachea occurs due to injury. There is a specific injury that occurs in Intensive care units where patients are intubated and kept on ventilatory support. The pressure exerted by the cuffs and the shearing movements of the ventilator both compromise the blood supply to the cartilaginous rings resulting in deformity of the cartilage and finally stenosis resulting in difficulty in breathing (stridor). Typically the stenosis develops a few weeks after the intensive care treatment. At Sinus and Nose we specialize in diagnosing and treating these patients. We do resection of stenotic segment and end to end anastomosis of the stumps of trachea.
